Pandion haliaetus 01

One of the two Ospreys at the Carolina Raptor Center. I arrived at their exhibit just as one of them was starting to feed. My presence distracted them enough to make him  stop eating and look at me, but they eventually got used to me and the one began to resume his meal. They were standing near a red light, which I am assuming was a heat lamp of some sort since it was cold outside. I think the light gave the photos I nice effect. This guy was the one who was not feeding at the time.

Did you know that the Osprey's diet consists of almost exclusively fish? They are capable of taking fish that weigh up to 4.5 lbs. Due to this abundant food source, they can be found on every continent except for Antarctica. The bird has been so prolific in cultures because of this, that it has even been featured in over 50 postage stamps around the world.
