Description

Species: Doedicurus clavicaudatus
Height: 5feet
Length: 20 Feet
Diet: Herbivore
When: Pleistocene Period
Where: South and Central America
Rank: #50

Doedicurus was the largest of the glyptodontids. These were a group of rather large, armored relatives of armadillos. Doedicurus were herbivores that were protected by scute covered body armor. They shared their habitat with many other South American creatures such as Macrauchenia, Megatherium and even the mighty Smilodon. They died out within the last 20,00 years, and there exists a huge possibility that the earliest humans in the Americas encountered or even hunted these creatures.

So, what makes this "overgrown armadillo" worthy of starting off our top 50 most badass prehistoric animals countdown? Well for one, it was essentially a living tank. It would have been very hard for the predators in it's environment to hunt this thing. As you can see, there's very little area to attack. Also, just look at it's tail. That's right. It's a spiked club. So if you were by any chance, brave or stupid enough to attack this creature, going for it's backside could potentially result in a brain-full of spike.

So, if it's a living tank with a spike tail, why is it only rank 50? Well, for starters, I'd imagine it wasn't the most aggressive animal around. Having that armor probably made it pretty slow, and it wasn't going to be chasing you down. It's spiked tail also was not a guaranteed weapon. That's right. The Doedicurus' field of vision couldn't reach behind it. Any attempt to attack predators would have been basically blind swings. Scientists have hypothesized that it's tail was mainly used for combat with other males of the same species. Also, I would wager that the Glyptodon isn't exactly the smartest animal around, so you likely wouldn't have to worry about one thinking of a way to crush or maim you. Nevertheless, it is still quite the physical badass of the animal kingdom.

Accuracy: For starters, I like that you portrayed Doedicurus doing something more mundane than fighting off predators or other rivals. People seem to forget that these are animals, not bloodthirsty monsters.

That said, it is known that Doedicurus had a short, tapir-like trunk.

Technique: I like the way you drew the tall grass, as well as the palm trees, but the terrain looks rather desolate and bleak. It could be fixed by adding more trees, or some far off mountains.

My other problem with the technique is perspective. While the far away tree looks fine, the grass around the Doedicurus doesn't really appear to be surrounding the Doedicurus, which is what I assume you were going for. Then there's the Doedicurus, which is pretty good, but the perspective is kinda weird there, making it look like it has only two legs.

Overall, you concept is good, but you need to improve your technique a little bit. I would suggest you try your hand at drawing landscapes.
